Alex Needham and Alison Parker of Radical Root Farm will present this in-depth workshop, drawing from their personal experience with the first 4 years of operating an organic farm.
Alex and Alison are part of the incubator program at Prairie Crossing in Grayslake, Illinois.

Part of the workshop will be “classroom style” and part will be a farm tour. Plan to bring appropriate clothes and footwear for an outdoor farm experience rain or shine--so bring sunscreen and rain gear if necessary.

All aspects of organic market vegetable production will be addressed, including.

  • Selecting a business structure
  • Capital and farm financing
  • Planning your year
  • Soil building
  • Equipment selection
  • Field planning
  • Scaling up
  • Marketing strategies

This workshop is part of the Young Organic Stewards project, which was supported by the Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, USDA, Grant #2011-49400-30756.

While the focus of the project is on young, new farmers, this workshop is open to anyone interested in beginning a market farm.

Radical Root Farm at Prairie Crossing will host a half-day event the next day. For details, see Scaling Up Your Vegetable Operation.
