Join us at Dan and Darlene Coehoorn's Farm for a field day focused on how to manage both fields and pastures to produce feed for the organic dairy herd, including a short description on how to calculate dry matter intake from grazing for the various ruminants on your farm. moses sponsored Transition to Organic Field Crops: Corn, Beans & Small Grains
August 28, 2010 | Sutherland, IA

Transitioning to organic row crop and small grain production will be discussed on Paul Mugge's successful organic farm. Paul has been monitoring his various production practices for many years and will discuss the use of underseeded clovers in small grains, the growing of canola in Iowa, and disease resistant soybean varieties. Paul has also planted Prairie Buffer Strips and will discuss this beneficial insect habitat and how it provides some control of soybean aphids. Any farmer looking to understand low input, sustainable and organic farming practices should plan to attend this field day and learn from a long-time organic farmer. We will discuss the requirements for transitioning to organic as well. For more information, please contact PFI at info@practicalfarmers.org. In joint partnership, MOSES and Practical Farmers of Iowa will be hosting this field day.
Time: 1:00 - 4:00pm

moses sponsored Organic Field Crops: Corn, Beans, Small Grains & Alfalfa/Grass Hay
September 10, 2010 | Maple Park, IL

Attendees will learn how to successfully produce crops organically, focusing on soil fertility management, weed management and pest control. Good yields of high quality crops can be produced from year- to-year through the use of crop rotation, green manures, and the encouragement of biodiversity. Dave and Mary Campbell have experimented over the years and found methods for controlling Canada thistle as well as problem insects. A representative of Midwest Bio Ag will discuss how the balance of soil health works not only to produce good yields, but also helps with weed and pest control. There will also be discussion of programs within NRCS that offer farmers cost share incentives to incorporate these organically approved practices. To register, please contact MOSES at 715-778-5775 or angie@mosesorganic.org.
Time: 1:00 - 4:00pm

moses sponsored Animal Health & Pasture Tour with Jerry Brunetti at Sylvan Meadows Farm

Producers interested in this new technology, used by organic farmers to increase soybean yields and build soil organic matter without cultivation, will want to attend this field day. To register, please contact: Kelly Jacobs, Vernon County Land & Water Conservation Department 608-637-5480 or kjacobs@vernoncounty.org. MOSES FIELD DAY RECAPS   → go to Field Day Photo Album

June 8 - Pangrac Farm - Lewiston, MN
Over 60 people attended the Pangrac farm field day on June 8th. Dale and Carmen Pangrac (along with their daughter Kim and son-in-law Andy) milk approximately 150 cows and farm approximately 450 acres including pasture, corn and small grains. Attendees got out to tour the pastures and facilities, with the family fielding a host of questions. Dr. Paul Detloff gave a compelling presentation on "Reading the Bovine Hair Coat," which highlighted how to determine health, longevity and milk production in dairy animals by observing patterns in the hair.

June 15 - Borgerding Farm - Belgrade, MN
The field day at Joe and Antoinette Borgerding's farm on June 15th drew about 50 people. The Borgerdings milk approximately 160 cows and have approximately 80 acres in pasture and an additional 320 in organic field crops. The field day focused on organic soil fertility and quality, with soil experts Karl Dallefeld of Prairie Creek Seed and Travis Mathison of Midwestern Bio-Ag leading up the field walk. The two experts highlighted the importance of soil biology, diversity and nutrient balance to good soil fertility. We looked at Borgerdings' pastures, their corn and alfalfa fields, and dug a soil pit to take a look below ground. Good practical information was shared among the group.
